Summerland, California Writer and Winner of L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest Makes Another Sale
Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) August 14, 2014 -- Kary was the 2nd quarter, first place winner for this year, making it further than some several thousand others, and where her winning story will also be published in the bestselling Science Fiction anthology series – L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume XXXI.
"My sister was in an accident with her children in the car. The car was totaled, but luckily no one was hurt. The accident got me thinking--what if people could be totaled the same way you total a car? What if you could get special insurance for valuable body parts, like brains? From there, I knew I wanted to write a brain in a jar story. If someone was still alive in there, how would they communicate? How would anyone recognize that a specific consciousness was present? I studied cognitive science in grad school, so I knew a thing or two about MRIs. When I combined the car accident with the brain science, I knew I had my story."
Editor of Galaxy's Edge, Mike Resnick was impressed enough to purchase the story and stated, "They say there are no new ideas, and they're right. But there -are- brilliant variations on old ideas, and "Totaled" is a shining example of one. When the story was submitted to Galaxy's Edge, I picked it up and began reading it. My first thought was, 'Another disembodied brain story. I wonder how many pages before it falls apart.' But by halfway through it hadn't fallen apart, and it wasn't like any other I had read. And by the time I was a couple of pages from the end I was hoping against hope that the author didn't stumble in those last 500 words...and sure enough, she pulled it off with style and elan. I don't know if a story by a new author, appearing in a relatively new magazine, can make the Hugo ballot, but I know that on quality it deserves to be there. And all credit for this one goes to the writer; the editor didn't change a word."
In addition to being Galaxy's Edge editor, Mike Resnick is also a judge in the Writers of the Future contest.
The Writers of the Future contest was initiated by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983 shortly after returning to the field of science fiction with his bestseller Battlefield Earth, and to date the contest has launched the careers of 12 New York Times bestselling authors.
