SunsetFinances.com Mourns the Death of Barrier Breaking Reporter, Helen Thomas
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 26, 2013 -- A July 20, 2013 New York Times article, written by David Stout, reports that Helen Thomas, the first woman reporter in the White House Press Corps, has died. The Editor and staff of Sunset Finances salute the accomplishments of this amazing woman.
Helen Thomas was 92 years old at her death. She married widowed journalist Douglas Cornell in 1971, and then outlived him by 21 years. In her 92 years she had seen the world change dramatically, including the coming and going of ten presidents. Ms. Thomas was born in Kentucky to parents that could not read or write but encouraged their children to get an education. Her story is a classic American story of perseverance.
When she graduated from college in 1942 she went to Washington to look for a job. She eventually found a job at The Washington Daily News in a clerical position and from there moved to the United Press news service where she spent the bulk of her career.
Every president from John Kennedy to Barack Obama has had to answer her questions which were notorious for being probing, brusque and somewhat confrontational. Perhaps that’s because in the early days of her career when women reporters were covering stories about housekeeping and entertaining, Helen was reporting on decision makers and people in power. Her career is an example of intelligence and determination, regardless of gender.
SunsetFinances.com mourns the loss of the groundbreaking reporter Helen Thomas. The Editor of Sunset Finances is proud to honor a woman with such a long and distinguished career.
