Tariq Drabu Welcomes New Discovery to Eliminate Dental Phobia
(PRWEB) June 16, 2014 -- Tariq Drabu is a Manchester born and educated dentist and specialist oral surgeon. He received his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, after spending years working in busy dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Today
Dr Drabu is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatments Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. Dedicated to education, Dr Drabu teaches and mentors postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.
Tariq Drabu was speaking about a recent article published in the Denistry Today on a new method that may thwart dental phobia. The full article can be read here.
Tariq Drabu said “Research in Nigeria found electrotherapy useful in reducing the fear in dental patients. The therapy used is similar to that used for pregnant women during labour. The electrotherapy transmits impulses to the brain, thereby reducing anxiety.”
Tariq Drabu in Manchester went on to say “Forty people took part in the study, all of them suffered from dental phobia. The scientists broke the subjects into four groups, each group then received a different therapy, with one group receiving no therapy at all. The findings showed that those who received the cranial electrotherapy had the highest success in reducing their fears.”
Tariq Drabu closed in saying “This is an interesting development for dental patients and has implications for reducing the risk of patients ending up with serious problems in the long run. Thousands of patients around the world have dental phobia, resulting in them avoiding the dentist until they are in agony, often ignoring signs that there may be a problem until it is too late. As dental professionals, there is only so much we can do to calm our patients, we need them through the door first before we can set their minds at ease. Unfortunately we cannot force our patients to attend regular check-ups and can only educate them on the importance of oral health and why they should be attending check-ups every six months. This new method may be part of a solution we have been looking for, which can help patients that suffer with dental phobia, helping them enjoy good oral health moving forward.”
