Testosterone Lawsuits Continue to Progress, Reports Baron and Budd
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 29, 2014 -- Manufacturers of drugs used to provide treatment for low testosterone continue to face lawsuits from plaintiffs alleging the drug manufacturers failed to provide adequate warnings of potentially fatal side effects, reports the national law firm of Baron and Budd. These “low-T” drugs include AndroGel, Axiron, Fortesta, Testim, Striant and others.
Testosterone therapy drugs have been linked to conditions such as stroke, blood clots, heart attack and other health issues. The lawsuits allege that manufacturers of these drugs did not provide sufficient warning of the risk of these health problems in either their advertising or labeling materials. Testosterone therapy drugs are designed to treat fatigue and low libido typically associated with aging.
The Public Library of Science published a study in January of 2014 showing a link between testosterone therapy drugs and cardiovascular problems (http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0085805). In the study, researchers stated that older men – as well as younger men with a pre-existing diagnosis of heart disease – have a substantially higher risk of suffering from myocardial infarction after beginning testosterone therapy. Despite that risk, according to the study, the use of testosterone therapy is increasing.
Several lawsuits are underway in various courts around the country. For example, two lawsuits have been filed in the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County against Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Testim. The plaintiff in the case claims that he suffered a heart attack in 2012 after using Testim as well as AndroGel (Olivetti et al v. Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc. et al, Case No. 140303508).
Another lawsuit was filed in April 2014 alleging that Auxilium misrepresented through physician and consumer advertising that Testim was safe for its intended use (Rios et al v. Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc. et al, Case No. 140302537).
