The Westchester Bank Launches The Veterans Career Mentoring Program
Yonkers, N.Y. February 17, 2014 (PRWEB) February 17, 2014 -- John Tolomer, President & CEO of The Westchester Bank, will launch a grassroots effort by small businesses in Westchester County to provide career mentoring to U.S. veterans. The launch of The Veterans Career Mentoring Program sponsored by The Westchester Bank, the first of its kind – anywhere in the country – takes place as the drawdown of U.S. military forces in Afghanistan is scheduled to begin in 2014.
More than 30 local private-sector small businesses have volunteered to mentor more than 50 veterans who have accepted invitations to the event at The Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, NY on February 25, 2014. Duncan Niederauer, CEO of the New York Stock Exchange will be the Keynote Speaker. Mr. Niederauer spearheaded a veterans outreach program at the NYSE that includes one-on-one mentoring, a 10-week internship, and a one-day symposium to train senior executives, human resource professionals and hiring managers in how to translate military training/resumes into civilian job opportunities. The NYSE program is in its third year and has demonstrated its viability by nearly doubling in size each year.
Small Business Takes the Lead…Again.
The significance of this effort in getting veterans back to work is that small business accounts for two outof every three jobs created in the U.S.
In addition to welcoming the more than 30 local businesses, Mr. Tolomer will introduce a consortium of organizations that have joined the bank in support of the program: NYSE Euronext, Fordham University, and The Medal of Honor Foundation, among others. The February 25th launch event will expand upon the day-long NYSE program (that trains executives & hiring managers) by including tri-state area veterans whose career mentoring will begin that same day. The media is invited to attend the afternoon mentoring sessions, beginning with the Welcome Veterans Luncheon at noon.
Media: Please RSVP if you wish to join us for lunch. A media interview area will be provided and should there be sufficient interest, a post-event press conference will be held.
