San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 16, 2013 -- The U-T San Diego’s two Spanish-language publications, the weekly newspaper Enlace and weekly entertainment magazine Vida Latina San Diego, earned top honors in several categories in the National Association of Hispanic Publications’ 2013 José Martí Publishing Awards. The prestigious Latino journalism awards were announced during the association’s annual conference in Anaheim earlier this month.
“It is an honor to receive these awards because they’re a testament to the quality of our newsroom’s team,” said Lilia O’Hara, editor of Enlace and Vida Latina San Diego. “Our objective is to deliver the best information possible through a variety of media platforms so that Latinos in the regions we serve have information that helps them live well and positively impacts their quality of life.”
Enlace grabbed the Gold Award in the following above-30,000 circulation categories: outstanding multiple article series; outstanding design – newspaper, broadsheet format; and outstanding event. The weekly newspaper also received the Gold Award for the highest percentage increase in ad dollars during 2012, a strong testimonial that San Diego businesses want to reach the Hispanic market.
“Thirty-three percent of the total population in San Diego is Hispanic, and advertisers are seeing the powerful impact the Hispanic market can have on their business,” said Sara Gaviria, Hispanic product manager for U-T San Diego. “If you are not targeting the Hispanic market, you are missing out on a significant part of the total market in San Diego.”
Other awards for Enlace included a Silver Award for outstanding Latin American political/business article, and Bronze Awards for outstanding editorial column in Spanish, outstanding political article, outstanding business article, and outstanding Latin America cultural article.
The weekly entertainment and lifestyle magazine, Vida Latina San Diego, earned Gold Awards for outstanding newsprint magazine and outstanding design for a magazine in newsprint format. Vida Latina San Diego, which launched in 2011, also received a Silver Award in the coveted outstanding new publication (above 30,000 circulation) category. It also grabbed a Bronze award for outstanding editorial column in Spanish.
“These awards are the stamp of approval for what we already knew about the high quality of our Spanish-language products,” said Tom Jimenez, U-T San Diego vice president of Spanish-language products. “We compete nationwide with the best of the best in Hispanic publications. We’re very proud.”
Each year, the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) presents the José Martí Publishing Awards, the most comprehensive Hispanic media awards in the United States.
