Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Appreciation Event in Union Twp This October
Cincinnati, Ohio (PRWEB) September 17, 2013 -- The American Veterans Traveling Tribute, which includes an 80% scale replica of the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., will be at Union Township Veterans Memorial Park from October 10-13, 2013.
Howard Daugherty, Director of the Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission, recently outlined how citizens could get involved with the event. "When the "Wall That Heals" is at Union Township Veterans Memorial Park in October, we would like our community to "Welcome Home" the thousands of Vietnam Veterans still living in the area.
"● Please Participate in the Letter Writing Campaign
Thousands of Vietnam Veterans visit the memorial as it travels from town to town across America. We would like to collect a "thank you" or "welcome home" letter for each Vietnam Veteran that visits the park to see the memorial in October. Letters can be mailed to Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 649, P.O. Box 426, Batavia, OH 45103. All letters will be reviewed for appropriateness and sealed in envelopes for the Vietnam Veterans who visit the wall and select an envelope. One letter will be selected for an invitation for two to join the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans and community members at the TQL (Total Quality Logistics) sponsored dinner on Saturday night, October 12.
"● Please Visit the American Veterans Traveling Tribute with Family & Friends
Save the dates of October 10-13, 2013 to see the memorials on display at the park. Bring family and friends to see this memorial, as well as the others memorials that will be on display at the same time. More information about the memorials can be found on the American Veterans Traveling Tribute web site at http://www.AVTT.org. The entire display will include memorials of fallen police, fire fighters, and veterans of all wars. This is an American Tribute for all of our heroes."
The largest of the memorials will be the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is often referred to as "The Wall That Heals." The Clermont County Veterans’ Service Commission, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 649, Union Township, and many others are working hard to make viewing the memorial possible for all who may not have the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to see the national memorial, Daugherty added.
At 80% scale of the nation’s memorial, the wall is more than 350 feet long and 8 feet tall at the apex. The names of more than 58,000 Vietnam War heroes are engraved on the wall. The organization which owns the display will be at the park with a database to assist locating any name on the wall. On their web site http://www.AVTT.org is a complete list of the names as well as other data including their hometown. "There are heroes from almost every town in America. With this said, you will realize there are many Vietnam Veterans still living among us," Daugherty said.
"Most Vietnam Veterans returned quietly after they served in the war. Many United States citizens were not in favor of the war and although the Vietnam Veterans served their country and received honorable discharges, their service was not celebrated when they return home," Daugherty added.
The President of the United States and the Governors of most states have recently declared March 30 or March 31 as Vietnam Veterans Day. This is the day the last Americans left Vietnam. Many towns across America have held "Welcome Home" celebrations recently as well.
Daugherty said, "As stated earlier, when the "Wall That Heals" is at Union Township Veterans Memorial Park in October, we would like our community to "Welcome Home" the thousands of Vietnam Veterans still living in the area. Please help us provide a letter of appreciation for each living Vietnam Veteran that visits the memorial in October."
