OLYMPIA, WA (PRWEB) October 19, 2016 -- Water treatment company CH2O was awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,767,470 – commonly known as the “470 patent” – in 2004 after the company’s team of chemists and engineers collaborated to develop a unique method for cleaning and maintaining water delivery systems. According to court documents, that patent was infringed upon by two competing companies, and on September 6, 2016, a federal jury awarded CH2O $12.5 million in damages.
The two infringing companies, Meras Engineering, Inc. and Houweling’s Nurseries (also known as Houweling’s Tomatoes), were also found guilty of willfully infringing CH2O’s patent, which may multiply CH2O’s damages award up to three times. Additionally, the jury also found the “470 patent” to be valid, confirming the same decision reached by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in a prior reexamination of the “470 patent” filed by Meras.
“It’s been a long ordeal but we are extremely gratified that the jury agreed with us on all issues,” said Carl Iverson, CH2O’s Chief Executive Officer and inventor of the ’470 patent. “This award recognizes the value of the patented technology, and it allows us to continue innovating and creating new products to protect health, safety, and the environment.”
The “470 patent” covers a method of treating flowing water in a water distribution system. This patent method makes water safer for its intended use by treating detrimental bacteria and mineral complexes in water distribution systems. With a portfolio of more than 15 U.S. patents and others issued in Spain, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and The Netherlands. CH2O is a company that develops innovative products like the “470 patent” to treat water in a variety of industrial, food processing, and agricultural applications for the purpose of conserving resources, preserving equipment, and improving water safety.
CH2O was legally represented in this matter by Christopher Marchese, Andrew Kopsidas, Michael Rosen, and Joanna Fuller of Fish & Richardson PC.
