YarnPlaces.com Introduces The Worldwide YarnBombing Map
(PRWEB) September 25, 2013 -- YarnPlaces.com, a directory for all places yarn, announced today the release of a Worldwide Yarn Bombing Map. It is the first time the full scope of the yarn bombing movement has been documented on the internet using maps, photos and text.
Yarn Bombing, also known as yarn storming or guerrilla knitting, originated in 2005, when Magda Sayeg knit a cosy for the doorknob of her Houston boutique to welcome and delight visitors. Since then, yarn bombing has evolved into a world wide phenomenon with knit and crochet adorning every type of object and space from stop signs to 1000 foot bridges. The motivations behind yarn bombing are as varied as the works: some are intended to humanize sterile public spaces, some are political statements, and some are simply meant to make people smile.
YarnPlaces.com’s Worldwide Yarn Bombing Map has been seeded with over 100 yarn bombings, both past and present. This initial 100 represents renowned yarn artists, as well as grass roots knit and crochet “crews” from around the world. Over 30 countries, and every continent is represented.
Mike Pilon, owner of YarnPlaces.com explains, "This is just a starting point. We invite the worldwide fiber community add yarn bombings to map. The goal is to create a comprehensive, organic, fascinating portrait of the yarn bombing movement from its inception until now."
Only a location and a link to a photo are necessary to initially list a yarn bombing. Other contributors can then flesh out details such as the artist/s, dates, and description. New bombings and modifications can be made through easy-to-use links on the site.
