YMCA of Greenwich Holds Annual Meeting Announces Year of Successes
Greenwich, CN (PRWEB) May 17, 2014 -- The YMCA of Greenwich held its annual meeting on May 13th and announced many milestones that occurred over the past twelve months, the most significant being the retirement of the outstanding construction debt.
Through the generosity of many friends of the YMCA, the debt was eliminated and the Y is now able to focus on its core mission areas: Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
The aquatics programs had a particularly strong year. The Marlins Swim team earned 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the Connecticut Age group Championship and had 12 swimmers qualify for the Nationals.
The Marlins Diving Club earned 2 East National Champions, 3 YMCA National Champions and was ranked 11th at the USA Diving National Meet.
Greenwich Water Polo continues to play very competitively. They are ranked “Top Club” in the Northeast in all age-groups. 40 Players were selected to the Northeast Zone Team, with 12 players selected for the USA National Training Camps and 2 players were selected for the USA National Training Teams.
One Water Polo player was selected for the Men’s Senior National Team – sixteen year old Thomas Dunston, the youngest player to ever make the Senior Team. If all goes according to plan, he will be playing for the Olympic Team in 2016.
The YMCA also announced they have elected six new members to their Board of Directors.
Jim Cabrera, Chairman of the Board of the YMCA said: “This has been a terrific 12 months, we are now debt free. The potential of what the YMCA will become is attracting incredible talent to the board. Tonight we are thanking five board members for their service as they pursue other opportunities within our community. And we are welcoming six new members who will bring an incredible amount of expertise and leadership.”
The six new board members elected are:
• Scott Elwell
• Al Brodbeck
• Robert Sterling
• Jeanie Wahl
• Jon Ross-Wiley
• Christine Lavin
In addition to the new board members, a group of young professionals have come together to form a Junior Board to help raise awareness in the community and support the YMCA’s scholarship programs.
Ed Philipp, CEO of the YMCA stated: “We ended 2013 having distributed over $200,000 in scholarship assistance for our childcare program at St. Roch’s, summer camp, membership and programs. We are committed to making sure our entire community has access to the programs we offer.”
2014 is expected to be an even busier year for the YMCA. They will host their 20th annual golf outing in June as well as offer a full complement of summer aquatic programs, camps, day care and opportunities for the community. Plans are also underway to celebrate the YMCA 100th anniversary of serving the Greenwich community in 2016.
